Demand rises for accounting and finance professionals

The latest Robert Walters UK Jobs Index revealed that the number of vacancies for accounting and finance professionals rose by 7% across South Africa in the first quarter of 2017 compared to the same period last year.

A factor for the rise in the number of roles is due to a number of employers offering reduced compensation, leading to accounting and finance professionals continuing their career in different sectors.

“In the first quarter of 2017, the rise in the number of roles has been largely driven by poor bonuses and low annual wages increases across various sectors as a result of socioeconomic unrest”, said Nick Brushett, Manager - South Africa.

Regulatory changes drives demand for technical skills

There has been demand from businesses looking for equity professionals with strong technical skills to assist with the new upcoming IFRS 15 regulation.

With these regulatory changes taking place, it may be a challenging time for empoyers to retain senior equity professionals as the year goes on.

Equity professionals highly sought after

Recent research from Robert Walters has also found that many equity professionals consider career progression and a better work-life balance to be a highly motivating factor when it comes to joining and staying within a firm. Businesses are therefore encouraged to offer this in order to retain equity professionals.

Organisations that are flexible in their hiring approach and those able to offer a clear potential career path and competitive pay will be more appealing to jobseekers

Equity professionals continue to be the highest in demand, leading to a candidate short market and a high staff turnover among these employees.

“Organisations that are flexible in their hiring approach and those able to offer a clear potential career path and competitive pay will be more appealing to jobseekers”, Nick Brushett, Robert Walters Manager – South Africa continues.
