A medium-sized Retail Bank, based in Johannesburg, is seeking a Chief Risk Officer to take responsibility for the entire standalone risk management function for the company. This company is a well-established business, and seek relevant applicants from the Financial Services Risk sector, who are already operating at a moderately senior or senior level (such as divisional Head of Risk or Senior Risk Officer, or recently made CRO), who are ready to step up into the CRO Chief Risk Officer role. Self-motivation, tenacity, and a good work ethic are all vital for successful applicants. They must show evidence that they have previously put in place Risk mitigation policies, procedures, and systems, where a suitable environment may not have currently existed.
Key qualifications and experience required for the Chief Risk Officer:
• Min. Bachelors degree in Finance, Management, or Risk related subject matter
• Relevant Risk Management qualification preferred
• 6+ years’ experience in Risk Management, either within Financial Services or a Big 4 firm
• Strong understanding of banking regulations within South Africa
• Team leadership experience
Key duties required for the Chief Risk Officer:
• Identifying and assessing relevant risks
• Putting a robust risk framework in place
• Providing advice to senior management on decision making
• Creating and maintaining risk plans
• Improve governance and internal controls within the business
• Hire and manage a suitable risk management team
• Creation and streamlining of audit processes
• Managing the fraud function of the bank
